Working Principle

Transient Planar Heat Source (TPS) technology, developed by Professor Silas Gustafsson of Chalmers University of Technology, is an advanced method for measuring thermal conductivity. It uses a disc-shaped, double-helix flat probe made from a conductive alloy, which functions simultaneously as a heat source and temperature sensor.

The principle is based on the transient temperature response of the probe when a current is applied, generating heat that diffuses through the surrounding material. The rate of heat diffusion—determined by monitoring resistance changes over time—correlates directly with the material’s thermal conductivity. The probe features a thin, double-layer insulating coating to ensure electrical insulation and mechanical stability. During testing, it is sandwiched between two sample sections, allowing precise, non-destructive measurements based on a well-defined mathematical model.

Test Objects

A wide variety of materials can be tested, including metals, ceramics, alloys, minerals, polymers, composites, paper, fabrics, and foam plastics (e.g., flat insulation materials). Other testable objects include mineral wool, cement walls, glass-reinforced composite panels (CRC), cement polystyrene panels, concrete, fiberglass panels, honeycomb paper panels, colloids, liquids, powders, and both granular and paste-like solids.
