Cell Assembly for Pouch Cell

Posted by Chia-yu Chen on

MSE Supplies provides both standard and custom-made products and solutions to meet customer's specific requirements for battery manufacturing. For pouch cells, we offer various equipment for electrode sheet preparation, cell assembly and battery case formation and sealing.

Pouch cell consists of repeated stacks of multiple layers components which are enclosed in an aluminum laminated film case. Each stack contains electrodes, electrolyte and a separator. After preparing electrode sheets, the next step is cell assembly which is an important step to ensure the cell connection and safety. The overview of cell assembly steps is shown below:

  • Cut electrodes using electrode die cutter
  • Weld current collector and tab together using welding machine
  • Stack layers (Anode > Separator > Cathode > Separator) using stacking machine

MSE Supplies offers equipment for pouch cell assembly machine including electrode die cutter, welding machine and stacking machine.

Electric die cutter

MSE Supplies offers a Glovebox Compatible Compact Pneumatic Battery Electrode Die Cutter.  If you need to customize maximum die size, please email us at sales@msesupplies.com.

Welding machine

MSE Supplies has a Benchtop Ultrasonic Metal Welder. It is widely used for welding electrode sheets (Cu & Al) and tabs (Al & Ni) onto current collectors for pouch cell. If you need to customize welding area, please email us at sales@msesupplies.com

Stacking machine

MSE Supplies also offers a Benchtop Manual Electrode Stacking Machine which can stably stack cathode, anode and separator through “Z” folding for pouch cell research.

The welding machine was used in one of the recent pouch cell research. The author studied supercapacitors with holey graphitic carbon nano-flakes (HGCNF) and used a unique approach to produce an additional conducting layer of carbon fabric coated with HGCNF. The pouch cells were fabricated with three symmetric cells which were stacked. The stacked cell then were welded with Ni tabs. The welded contact is shown in the Fig7(b) below.
