Overview

In-situ optical microscopy plays a crucial role in the study of lithium and zinc batteries. In the field of lithium batteries, this technique is widely used to observe the microscopic behavior and aging mechanisms of battery materials, as well as to monitor the thickness and morphological changes of the electrode during charge and discharge processes, enabling the calculation of the full-charge thickness expansion rate of the electrode. In the field of zinc batteries, in-situ optical microscopy and other techniques are employed to investigate the stripping/deposition behavior of zinc anodes, study their electrochemical performance, and explore modifications to zinc anodes and electrolytes.

To further confirm the inhibitory effect of the CMX interfacial protection layer on dendrite growth, chemical corrosion, and the HER side reaction, in-situ electrochemical optical microscopy testing was conducted. As shown in Figure (g), after 10 minutes of zinc deposition, numerous uneven nuclei appeared on the zinc surface. With extended plating time, the zinc deposition layer continued to grow, forming many protruding regions. Particularly after 60 minutes of plating, the exposed zinc surface was covered with abundant zinc dendrites, resulting in a highly uneven surface. In contrast, due to the low energy barrier and favorable zinc affinity of the CMX interfacial protection layer, the overall morphological evolution of the zinc electrode was well-controlled (Figure (h)). Even after 60 minutes of plating, zinc tended to deposit uniformly on the CMX layer without forming zinc dendrites.

Additionally, the dendrite formation process on bare zinc can be clearly observed in the supplementary video S1. For hydrophobic CMX@Zn, video S2 shows that there were almost no protrusions or bubbles on the CMX surface, indicating that dendrites, corrosion, and HER phenomena were effectively suppressed. These results demonstrate that the CMX@Zn anode exhibits significantly higher stability in aqueous zinc-ion battery systems compared to bare zinc anodes, resulting in excellent electrochemical performance.

The modified zinc electrode sheets should have a size of 15–20 mm and must be provided as square samples (circular samples cannot be used).
