Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) is a yellow to red solid compound with a band gap of 2.7eV. It has wide transmission wavelength range, which makes it a great infrared optical material. Due to its high vapor pressure, it should be evaporated in dedicated chamber to avoid contamination. It is evaporated under vacuum to create thin films for diodes, electro-luminescent devices, and solar cells applications.
Due to the highly reactive nature of these materials, packaging in oil is required to reduce the opportunity for oxidation or other reaction.
