1,2-Bis(2,2-difluoroethoxy)ethane can be used as electrolyte solution of a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery. The half-cell with the F4DEE electrolyte displays remarkable long-term stability with high coulombic efficiency. The iteratively designed molecules F4DEE integrate several desired properties, including fast ion conduction, low and stable cell overpotential, high Li metal efficiency, fast activation and oxidative stability. The developed electrolytes, especially F4DEE and F5DEE, simultaneously possess high ionic conductivity, low and stable interfacial transport, reproducibly high Li metal efficiency, record-fast activation and high-voltage stability. These features enable long cycle life of Li metal batteries and anode-free pouch cells under lean electrolyte and realistic testing conditions.
