Ytterbium Metal and Compounds, Y

Ytterbium, Y

Atomic No.: 70

Molecular Weight 173.04 g/mole

Ytterbium has been used in photovoltaic, optical glasses, ceramics and crystals

Ytterbium is being used as dopant for fiber amplifier and various solid state laser materials.

Ytterbium metal's electrical resistance increases when subjected to very stresses. This phenomenon has been used to detect  earthquakes and nuclear explosions by monitoring ground deformations.

Ytterbium has been used in alloys to strengthen stainless steels due to its ability to refine grains.

Ytterbium is employed in portable x-ray machines where electricity is not available.
