Cover Story on Nature: Atomic Doping in Nanometer-Scale Crystals

Posted by MSE Supplies on

The Nature magazine featured this materials science research on its cover page of the 27 August, 2015 issue. A group of scientists from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA reported their recent work on the doping of materials at the nanocrystal scale to demonstrate how the physical and chemical properties of nano materials can be engineered at the atomic level by doping. As the authors stated, "Doping is a process in which atomic impurities are intentionally added to a host material to modify its properties. It has had a revolutionary impact in altering or introducing electronic1, 2, magnetic3,4, luminescent5, 6, and catalytic7 properties...

Rare-earth innovation to improve polymer manufacturing

Posted by MSE Supplies on

Cerium based rare earth chemicals are available from MSE Supplies: http://www.msesupplies.com/collections/cerium-metal-and-compounds   Source: physics.org, by Laura Millsaps The Critical Materials Institute, a U.S. Department of Energy Innovation Hub, has created a new chemical process that makes use of the widely available rare-earth metal cerium to improve the manufacture of nylon.   The process uses a cerium-based material made into nanometer-sized particles with a palladium catalyst to produce cyclohexanone, a key ingredient in the production of nylon.   Traditional methods of producing cyclohexanone involve high temperatures and high pressure, and necessitate the use of hydrogen.   "After a lot of trials, we...

The Economic Benefits of the North American Rare Earths Industry

Posted by MSE Supplies on

Executive Summary The rare earth industry is essential to the North American economy. The industry directly contributes to the North American economy with $795 million in shipments, employing nearly 1,050 workers with a payroll of $116 million. But the contributions of the rare earth industry go well beyond its direct economic footprint. The rare earth industry fosters economic activity indirectly through supply-chain purchases and through the payrolls paid by the industry itself and its suppliers. This in turn leads to induced economic output as well. As a result, each job in the rare earth industry generates an additional 5.0 jobs...
