MSE Supplies, a partner in innovation: Barium Titanate (BaTiO3) Single Crystals

Posted by MSE Supplies Admin on

MSE Supplies is a trusted partner globally in helping to enable innovations.  We have supplied materials, equipment, and lab supplies to over 2000 research laboratories and companies worldwide.  We are a U.S. based supplier helping the advancement of research in fields such as materials science, photovoltaics, energy storage, semiconductors, optical materials, biomedical research, and basic science research, to name a few.

In this article, we highlight recent research work using our products that have been presented in a peer reviewed journal.

Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology published a paper on measuring and mapping domains and the resulting stress in barium titanate. They purchased the barium titanate (BaTiO3) from us here at MSE Supplies.

The research focuses on using a technique known as electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) to produce a stress strain map of the barium titanate single crystal.  The measuring of stress and strain in these materials has been accomplished before but never on the microscale.

Fig. 1. Optical micrographs of isolated domains visible on the surface of a BaTiO3 single crystal with majority domain polar c axis oriented perpendicular to and out of the image plane. Surface topography arises from differential etching of different domain orientations. (a) Isolated lenticular a domains with polar axis oriented parallel to the image plane and 90° domain boundaries with the majority domain. (b) Isolated blocky c domains with polar axis oriented into the image plane and 180° domain boundaries with the majority domain.

They found that high resolution ESBD can generate a special resolution of 30nm with strain and rotation resolutions to about 10-4.  This technique separated sub micrometer domains and their rotations within domains allowing for 2D strain, rotation, and stress mapping.
