Applications

Niobium Carbide (Nb₂CT_x) is a typical representative material among the emerging family of 2D layered transition metal carbides and/or nitrides referred to as MXenes. It has exhibited multiple advantages such as metallic conductivity, a plastic layer structure, small band gaps, and the hydrophilic nature of its functionalized surface. It is widely used for energy storage applications such as supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, and lithium–sulfur batteries. It also can be used for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding coatings, semiconductor and catalysis.

Nb₂CT_x is one of the materials with the few atomic layers (3 layers) configuration in MXenes. It possesses lower Fermi level and superior gravimetric capacitance than Ti₃C₂T_x (which is the most widely studied MXene). It is also one of the most promising electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries.
