Boron Carbide is an extremely hard gray or black ceramic material with a Mohs hardness higher than 9. It is one of the hardest known materials whose hardness is only slightly exceeded by cubic boron nitride (CBN) and diamond. It is often used to make bullet proof vest and tank armor. Besides superior hardness, it also has great chemical resistance and good shielding properties against neutrons. These properties make Boron Carbide suitable for various applications, including abrasives (grinding, lapping, ...), nuclear, to make ceramics and alloys, etc.
