What to know before you buy
A thermal evaporator for carbon heats a carbon rod or fiber under vacuum until carbon evaporates and settles on the sample as a thin, even film. Labs use carbon coating to make nonconductive samples suitable for SEM imaging and EDS analysis, since carbon adds little to the X-ray spectrum.
This collection lists three MSE PRO models. The MSE PRO thermal evaporation carbon coater handles routine SEM sample prep. The MSE PRO pulsing thermal evaporation carbon coater applies carbon in pulses, which gives finer control over film thickness and limits sample heating. The MSE PRO high vacuum thermal evaporation carbon coater works at lower pressure for denser, finer-grained films, such as for TEM support films and high-magnification work.
Choose based on sample type and the magnification you work at. Compare chamber size, sample stage and vacuum system on each listing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why use carbon coating instead of a metal sputter coating?
Carbon is light and adds very little to an EDS spectrum, so it does not mask the elements you want to measure. Metal coatings such as gold give a stronger signal for imaging but add their own X-ray peaks. Choose carbon for EDS, EBSD prep and many mineral and geological samples.
Which carbon coater fits my lab?
For general SEM and EDS prep, the standard thermal evaporation carbon coater is the simplest fit. If you need tight thickness control or have heat-sensitive samples, choose the pulsing model. For TEM grids or high-resolution imaging, the high vacuum carbon coater gives finer films.
What does pulsed evaporation change?
Pulsed evaporation applies carbon in short bursts rather than one long heating step. That lets you build film thickness gradually, reduces heat load on the sample and gives more repeatable results. The pulsing carbon coater suits polymers, biological samples and other materials that could be damaged by heat.
What consumables does a carbon coater need?
Thermal carbon coaters evaporate carbon rods or carbon fiber, which you replace as they are used up. The vacuum pump also needs routine care. Check each listing for the carbon source it uses and whether a pump is included before you order.
Can I order a carbon coater with a specific configuration?
Yes. Send your sample size, coating needs and power requirements through the quote request form. For several units across a facility, use the bulk order request form.
