Sample Preparation, Temperature Control, and Media Quality in Shaker-Based Workflows
A shaker controls motion, speed, and duration. What it cannot control is the quality of the sample being agitated, the concentration of the medium, or the temperature range beyond its built-in heating accessory. Each variable that falls outside the shaker itself determines whether the mixing result is reproducible across runs or only within a single session.
Mass Accuracy Before Agitation
Concentration errors in a shaker-prepared solution originate at the weighing step, not at the mixing step. A laboratory balance with sufficient readability for the mass range being prepared sets the concentration with the accuracy the downstream assay or synthesis requires. A balance with too coarse a resolution introduces a fixed percentage error in every sample that no amount of mixing corrects: the shaker homogenizes the error rather than removing it.
Reagent and Media Quality for Dissolution and Suspension Work
The quality of the aqueous phase in which a sample is dissolved or suspended determines the background ionic and organic content the shaker distributes uniformly through the solution. Laboratory water purification systems producing Type I or Type II water reduce resistivity, dissolved organics, and microbial load to levels that do not interfere with cell culture, buffer preparation, or chromatographic mobile phases prepared in the shaker vessel. Tap or deionised water carries variable ion content that shifts from batch to batch and appears as reproducibility variance in any protocol where the aqueous background matters.
Temperature-Controlled Incubation and Post-Process Drying
Edmund Bühler incubator hoods extend shaker temperature control to 60°C, but protocols requiring higher temperatures or precisely controlled humidity call for a dedicated view all options in the incubator and environmental chamber range, which covers temperatures from sub-ambient to several hundred degrees and humidity from dry to fully saturated. Once agitation is complete, a MSE Supplies Drying Ovens laboratory drying oven removes solvent from the recovered solid or concentrate at controlled temperature, completing the processing sequence that the shaker began in solution.
Reproducible shaker results depend on what goes into the vessel and what surrounds the instrument. General lab supplies including vessels, closures, and consumables complete the setup, and for an overview of all laboratory instrumentation and materials available from MSE Supplies, the Materials Science products hub covers all research categories.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I choose an orbital shaker, a microplate shaker or a thermoshaker?
An orbital shaker such as the ELMI Sky Line S-3.02 20M moves flasks, bottles and trays on a platform for general mixing and culture. A microplate shaker like the Edmund Buhler TiMix 5 is built for plates. If samples also need heating, a thermoshaker such as the ELMI DTS-4 for 4 microplates or the Benchmark Multi Therm combines shaking with temperature control.
Can I shake samples inside a CO2 incubator or under controlled temperature?
Yes. The Edmund Buhler miniature shaker KM for CO2 incubators is made to run inside an incubator. For a closed, heated space on an Edmund Buhler shaker, add the incubator hood TH 15. The MSE PRO 50L shaking incubator combines both in one unit and comes with a universal spring tray.
How do I hold my vessels on the platform?
Holders depend on the shaker. Edmund Buhler shakers take rack systems such as the Combifix SM A, and the KM and TiMix 5 series have their own accessory listings, including accessories for the TiMix 5. IKA users can add the MS 3.5 PCR plate attachment or the MS 450 swirler foam attachment, and Benchmark Multi Therm accessories are listed separately.
Which shaker suits separating funnels or many flasks at once?
For liquid-liquid extraction, the Jeio Tech funnel shaker holds separating funnels. For high flask counts, the Edmund Buhler multi-flask shaker VKS 75 A control is built for large loads, and the universal shaker SM 30 B control covers general flask and bottle work with a choice of racks.
What should I use for gentle tube mixing instead of shaking?
Rotators and rotary mixers turn tubes end over end, which suits blood samples, bead binding and gentle resuspension. Options here include the ELMI RM-2S Intelli-mixer and RM-2L, both with mix racks, and the NEST variable speed tube revolver with digital display.
Can I order several shakers or a specific configuration?
Yes. For several units, such as one shaker per bench or matched platforms across a lab, use the bulk order request form. For a specific setup, such as a shaker with a particular rack system or incubator hood, describe it on the quote request page and list the model names you are considering.
