What to know before you buy

A stereo microscope sends a separate image to each eye, so the sample appears in depth. Working distance is long and magnification is low compared with a compound microscope. That makes it the usual tool for dissection, sorting small parts, inspecting solder joints and fracture surfaces, and checking samples before higher magnification work.

The MSE PRO range covers three designs. Zoom models, such as the SMK-1048 zoom stereo microscope, change magnification continuously. Wide field models, such as the SMK-1057, give a broad view for scanning larger parts. Parallel light zoom models, such as the SMK-1060, send both optical paths through a shared objective. The collection also lists several MSE PRO binocular stereo zoom microscope configurations.

For animal studies, RWD offers a desktop binocular stereo microscope and a digital microscope that shows the image on a screen. Kern lists a solder protection lens for electronics work. For how stereo designs compare with other types, read What are the Different Types of Microscopes?

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I choose a stereo or a compound microscope?

Choose a stereo microscope for whole, opaque or three dimensional samples that you handle, cut or sort under the lens. A compound microscope suits thin, transparent sections on slides at high magnification. Many labs use a stereo microscope for sample preparation and screening, then move selected samples to a compound or electron microscope.

What is the difference between zoom, wide field and parallel light models?

Zoom models such as the SMK-1052 suit work that moves between overview and detail often. Wide field models such as the SMK-1055 give a broad view for scanning boards and larger parts. Parallel light models such as the SMK-1058 use a shared objective with parallel paths, a layout often chosen for modular setups. Compare magnification ranges on each product page.

Can I show or record the image?

The RWD Digital Microscope displays the image on a screen, which helps with teaching, documentation and group review. If you plan to add a camera to a binocular model later, check the product page for a trinocular port or camera option before ordering.

What accessories are listed for stereo microscopes?

The Kern solder protection lens OZB-A4646 shields the objective from solder spatter and flux during electronics work. Check that it fits your microscope objective before ordering. For a configuration that is not listed, describe your setup in the quote request form.

How do I order several microscopes for a teaching lab?

For a set of identical microscopes for a teaching lab or core facility, use the bulk order request form. If you need a specific configuration, such as a particular stand, light source or camera setup, describe it in the quote request form.
