Frequently Asked Questions

What particle size is used for metal 3D printing?

It depends on the process. Laser powder bed fusion usually uses about 15 to 45 µm or 15 to 53 µm powder. Electron beam melting uses coarser powder, around 45 to 105 µm, and directed energy deposition uses about 45 to 150 µm.

Why does powder sphericity matter?

Spherical, gas-atomized powder flows well and packs evenly, so each layer spreads smoothly and parts come out dense. Irregular particles spread poorly and leave more porosity.

Which alloy should I choose?

316L and 17-4PH stainless steels are general-purpose and corrosion resistant. Ti-6Al-4V is light and strong for aerospace and medical parts. AlSi10Mg suits light, thin-walled parts. Inconel 718 and 625 handle high temperatures, CuCrZr gives high thermal and electrical conductivity, and Nitinol is used for shape memory parts.

How should metal powder be stored?

Keep it sealed, dry and away from heat. Moisture and oxygen pickup hurt flowability and cause porosity in printed parts, so dry the powder before use if it has been exposed. Fine aluminum and titanium powders are reactive and need careful handling to avoid dust fires.

Can leftover powder be reused?

Unmelted powder is often sieved and reused. Track its oxygen content and particle size over several builds, since both change with reuse, and mix in fresh powder when needed.
