Acetylation of histone H3 at lysine 9 (H3K9) is a post-translational modification where an acetyl group is added to the lysine residue at position 9 on the histone H3 protein. This modification is mediated by histone acetyltransferases (HATs), which add acetyl groups, and histone deacetylases (HDACs), which remove them. H3K9 acetylation is associated with gene activation. It is often found at active promoters and enhancers, facilitating a more open chromatin structure that allows transcription factors to access DNA.
