Description: CD4 antigen is a 55 kDa, cell surface, type I membrane glycoprotein that belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily. CD4 plays a crucial role in T cell development and is essential for the optimal function of mature T cells. It is expressed in most thymocytes, the majority of helper T cells, a subset of NK-T cells, dendritic cells, neutrophils, and macrophages. CD4 also acts as a receptor for the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein gp120, facilitating viral entry into the host cell.
