Overview

The melting point tester determines the temperature at which a solid transitions (melts) into a liquid state, abbreviated as m.p. For DNA molecules, the melting point is typically represented as Tm. The temperature at which the reverse process occurs (liquid transitioning to solid) is referred to as the freezing point. Unlike the boiling point, the melting point is minimally affected by pressure. In most cases, a substance’s melting point is equal to its freezing point.
