Background
Aspartate transaminase (AST) or aspartate aminotransferase, also known as AspAT, ASAT, AAT, or serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), is a pyridoxal phosphate (PLP)-dependent transaminase enzyme. Low levels of AST are normally found in the blood. When cells of the liver, heart, skeletal muscles, kidneys, brain, or red blood cells are damaged, AST is released into the bloodstream, leading to elevated levels. Therefore, AST is often used as a biomarker for liver health, although it is not specific to the liver and may be elevated in conditions involving other tissues as well.
