What is the difference between C-plane and R-plane sapphire?

C-plane is the most common orientation and is the standard substrate for GaN LEDs and other GaN epitaxy. R-plane is used for silicon-on-sapphire and for growing some non-polar films.

Single side or double side polished?

Single side polished wafers suit epitaxy and deposition on one face. Double side polished wafers are used where light passes through the wafer or both sides need processing.

Why use sapphire as a substrate?

Sapphire is hard, chemically inert and electrically insulating, and it transmits light from the ultraviolet to the mid-infrared (about 0.2 to 5 µm). It is also a lower-cost substrate for GaN than bulk GaN.

What GaN-on-sapphire wafers are available?

There are Si-doped N-type, Mg-doped P-type and Fe-doped semi-insulating GaN layers on sapphire, plus AlGaN/GaN HEMT structures. These save you from growing the GaN layer yourself.
