Sodium channel blocker; Neuroprotective
Functions
Riluzole is a clinically useful drug for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Riluzole inhibits glutamate release via inactivation of voltage-dependent ion channels, effects expression and signal transduction of glutamate receptors, and facilitates glutamate uptake. It has also been investigated as a treatment for depression and anxiety. Riluzole induced apoptosis in mGluR1-expressing melanoma cells, inhibited cell proliferation in a U87mgglioblastoma model via blockage of glutamate release, and inhibited the growth of brain tumor stem-like cells via downregulation of GLUT3.
Application Procedures
First dissolved in DMSO (up to 25 mg/ml) or in Ethanol (up to 25 mg/ml), then diluted to aqueous buffer. Solutions in
DMSO or ethanol may be stored at -20°C for up to 2 months.
