Description
Erythropoietin-Alpha (EPO-Alpha) is a recombinant form of the naturally occurring glycoprotein hormone erythropoietin (EPO). It is essential for the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of erythroid progenitor cells, which are precursors to red blood cells. EPO-Alpha binds to the erythropoietin receptor (EPOR) on these progenitor cells, activating signaling pathways that promote erythropoiesis, the process of red blood cell formation. EPO is primarily produced and released by the tubular and juxtatubular capillary endothelial cells, as well as the interstitial cells of the kidney. It is commonly used to treat anemia, particularly in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and those undergoing chemotherapy, by stimulating the production of red blood cells.
