H3K4 methylation refers to the addition of methyl groups to the lysine 4 residue of histone H3, a process that can occur in three states: mono-, di-, and trimethylation (H3K4me1, H3K4me2, and H3K4me3). This modification is associated with transcriptional activation and is typically found at the promoter and enhancer regions of actively transcribed genes.
