Background
Myoglobin (symbol Mb or MB) is an iron- and oxygen-binding protein found in the muscle tissue of vertebrates in general and in almost all mammals. Myoglobin is released from damaged muscle tissue, such as the heart, making it a sensitive marker for muscle injury. Its levels in the blood can rise rapidly following muscle trauma, including conditions like myocardial infarction (heart attack), and are often used in clinical diagnostics to assess the extent of muscle damage.
