Background
Ki67 is a nuclear protein that is expressed in proliferating cells. Ki67 is preferentially expressed during late G1, S, M, and G2 phases of the cell cycle, while cells in the G0 (quiescent) phase are negative for this protein. Increased proliferative activity, as indicated by elevated Ki67 expression, is often associated with tumor growth and aggressive biological behavior in various cancers. Therefore, Ki67 is widely used as a proliferation marker in diagnostic pathology to assess the growth fraction of a given cell population and to help predict prognosis and guide treatment strategies.
