Introduction
Carbon Paper Substrate is a carbon particle-filled, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) based carbon fiber paper manufactured utilizing continuous carbonization process. This carbon paper substrate treated with 13% PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is typically used as a gas diffusion layer (GDL) in various electrochemical devices, including fuel cells and electrolyzers. Its primary role in such applications is to facilitate gas diffusion while also acting as a current collector. PTFE is a hydrophobic material that is applied to carbon paper to improve its water management capabilities. The 13% PTFE content helps to make the surface more water-repellent, preventing excessive water retention in the gas diffusion layer while still allowing gases (such as hydrogen or oxygen in a fuel cell) to diffuse through.
Application Note
In a fuel cell or electrolyzer, the carbon paper treated with PTFE acts as a GDL. It provides a pathway for gases (like hydrogen or oxygen) to reach the catalyst layer while also conducting electrons to the external circuit, functioning as both a current collector and a gas diffusion medium.
Please note that for current collection purposes alone, carbon paper treated with PTFE might not be the optimal choice compared to traditional metal current collectors like titanium, stainless steel, or nickel. These metals are often preferred due to their superior electrical conductivity and mechanical robustness, especially in applications where direct electrical contact and durability are crucial.
