Derivatives of the 1,3-dialkylimidazolium cation associated with various anions are amongst the most investigated class of ionic liquids. This is due to their ease of synthesis, stability and the possibility of fine-tuning their physical chemical properties by the simple choice of the N-alkyl substituents and/or anions. 1,3-dimethylimidazolium-based ionic liquids show promise as electrolytes because of their special cation structure.
