Isopropyltio-beta-D-thiogalctopyronoside is an inducer of beta-galactosidase activity in bacteria. Together with chromogenic substates X-Gal or Bluo-Gal, IPTG is used to determine lac gene expression in recombinant methods by binding specifically to the repressor protein of the lac operon.
