Background
CASP1 (caspase-1) is also named as IL1BC, IL1BCE and belongs to the peptidase C14A family. It is a cysteine protease that regulates inflammatory processes through its capacity to process and activate the interleukin-1-beta (IL1B), IL18, and IL33 precursors. Upon activation, caspase-1 cleaves these cytokine precursors into their mature, biologically active forms, which are then secreted to mediate inflammatory responses. Caspase-1 is also a key component of the inflammasome, a multiprotein complex involved in the innate immune response. Dysregulation of caspase-1 activity has been implicated in various inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, as well as in the pathogenesis of certain cancers and neurodegenerative disorders.
