Frequently Asked Questions

What is a YAG crystal?

YAG is yttrium aluminum garnet (Y3Al5O12). It is hard, chemically stable and optically isotropic, which makes it one of the most widely used host crystals for solid-state lasers.

What is the difference between Nd:YAG and Yb:YAG?

Nd:YAG lases at 1064 nm and is usually pumped near 808 nm. It is the most common solid-state laser crystal. Yb:YAG lases at 1030 nm, is pumped near 940 nm, and produces less heat, which suits high-power thin-disk lasers.

What is Ce:YAG used for?

Ce:YAG emits yellow light at around 550 nm. It is used as a scintillator in radiation detectors and as the phosphor that turns blue LED light into white light.

What is Cr4+:YAG used for?

Cr4+:YAG works as a saturable absorber for passive Q-switching of Nd:YAG and Yb:YAG lasers, producing short, high-energy pulses.

How do I choose the doping level?

Higher doping absorbs pump light in a shorter length but adds heat and can reduce efficiency. Nd:YAG is commonly around 1 at%. Match the doping and crystal length to your pump source and laser design.
