Overview

A Microwave Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) is a precision instrument used to measure the transmission and reflection properties of RF and microwave devices across a wide frequency range. It analyzes S-parameters (e.g., S11, S21) to provide detailed amplitude and phase information, enabling accurate characterization of components like antennas, filters, amplifiers, and cables. VNAs are essential in industries such as telecommunications, aerospace, and electronics for tasks like impedance matching, device performance evaluation, and signal integrity analysis, making them indispensable tools in RF and microwave engineering.

A vector network analyzer can test electromagnetic shielding and absorption performance. Electromagnetic shielding is primarily calculated using S-parameters, while absorption efficiency is calculated using electromagnetic parameters.

Sample Requirements

Powder Sample Testing:

  • Coaxial method: Requires at least 200 mg of powder sample (paraffin is not needed).

Bulk Sample Testing (Coaxial Method):

  • Requires a coaxial ring with dimensions of outer diameter 7 mm, inner diameter 3.04 mm, and thickness 2 mm.

Bulk Sample Testing (Waveguide Method):

  • Different frequency ranges require corresponding sample dimensions:
    • 1.13–1.73 GHz: 82.4 × 164.8 × (10.0–35.0) mm
    • 1.72–2.61 GHz: 54.46 × 108.92 × (8.0–12.0) mm
    • 2.60–3.95 GHz: 33.89 × 71.84 × (8.0–12.0) mm
    • 3.94–5.99 GHz: 22.0 × 47.25 × (8.0–12.0) mm
    • 5.38–8.17 GHz: 15.75 × 34.70 × (2.0–6.0) mm
    • 8.2–12.4 GHz: 22.9 × 10.2 × (2.0–6.0) mm
    • 12.4–18.0 GHz: 15.9 × 8.03 × (2.0–4.0) mm
    • 18.0–26.5 GHz: 10.95 × 4.5 × (2.0–4.0) mm
    • 26.0–40.0 GHz: 7.15 × 3.60 × (2.0–4.0) mm

Bulk Sample Testing (Arch Method):

  • Requires samples with one of the following dimensions: 180 × 180 mm, 300 × 300 mm, or 600 × 600 mm. This method directly measures absorption efficiency but cannot measure electromagnetic parameters.

SPDR Testing for Bulk Samples:

  • Samples must have uniform thickness and a dielectric constant > 20. Dimensions required (length/width or diameter, thickness):
    • 1 GHz: 110–190 mm, 3 mm
    • 2.5 GHz: 60–120 mm, 3 mm
    • 3 GHz: 50–120 mm, 3 mm
    • 5 GHz: 50–100 mm, 1.6 mm
    • 10 GHz: 30–100 mm, 1 mm
    • 15 GHz: 20–100 mm, 0.5 mm
    • 20 GHz: 20–40 mm, 0.5 mm
    • 28 GHz: 20–40 mm, 0.5 mm
    • 39 GHz: 20–40 mm, 0.5 mm

Quasi-Optical Cavity Testing:

  • Samples must have uniform thickness and a dielectric constant < 20, with dimensions: length > 40 mm, width > 40 mm, and thickness < 1 mm.
