Milling Media, Grinding Media & Grinding Balls
Milling media is crucial for grinding substances into fine powders or reducing them to a desired particle size. If you're looking for effective solutions for your research and development (R&D) team or any other research application that requires controlled particle compositions, milling media is a valuable investment.
MSE Supplies provides several types of milling media, including alumina grinding media, milling balls and milling jars for critical crushing.
Please note consumable products are nonrefundable or eligible for return. Quality issues or concerns must be reported within 1 week of delivery.
Metallic Grinding Media
Primarily composed of metal alloys, metallic grinding media is used across several industries. They are hard enough to crush solid substances and offer effective crushing and grinding, saving time. We provide the following types of metallic grinding media:
Non-Metallic Grinding Media
Where metallic contamination is a factor or for applications that need specific material properties, non-metallic grinding balls offer the ideal solution. These are milling media made from substances other than metal. MSE Supplies has the following non-metallic grinding media:

From Milling to Final Product: The Instrumentation That Surrounds Grinding Media Selection and Use
Milling media selection is determined by three variables: the target material, the contamination tolerance of the end product, and the particle size and morphology the downstream process requires. A media set that works for one material fails for another when the hardness difference causes excessive media wear into the sample, or when the media material reacts with the charge during subsequent thermal treatment. The instrumentation around the mill is what translates a media choice into a verified particle output and a usable pressed form.
Ball Mill Equipment and Cross-Sectional Analysis of Milled Compacts
Ball mill jars and grinding media must come from matched materials so that jar wall composition and media composition are the same: an alumina media set in a steel jar cross-contaminates the charge at the jar wall contact surface. Ball milling equipment options are in the powder processing category; view all options for planetary, vibratory, and roller mills alongside the matched jar sets they require. For milled metal powders and pressed compacts, metallographic supplies provide the mounting, polishing, and etching consumables needed to examine grain structure and homogeneity in cross-section after milling and consolidation.
Particle Size Measurement and Milling Endpoint Verification
Milling endpoint is reached when particle size meets the specification the downstream process requires, not when a set milling time has elapsed. A particle size analyzer for research labs measures the size distribution of the milled powder directly, identifying whether the run achieved the target D50 or left a bimodal distribution from incomplete reduction. Particle size data allows mill speed, duration, and media-to-charge ratio to be adjusted between runs without relying on indirect indicators like charge temperature or motor current draw.
Pressing and Thermal Processing After Milling
Milled powder that has reached the target particle size proceeds to consolidation. A hydraulic pellet press compresses the powder into a compact with defined geometry and green density, which sets the shrinkage behavior and final density achievable in the subsequent firing step. The compact is then placed in a lab crucible matched to the sintering temperature and atmosphere, where it undergoes calcination or reactive sintering to produce the final dense ceramic or composite body.
Media material, particle size verification, and downstream processing compatibility are three decisions that are made together. A milling run that produces the right particle size from the right media but feeds into a pressing or sintering step that the powder was not characterized for wastes the measurement work.
