Heating Mantles

A heating mantle wraps a round-bottom flask in a shaped element so the glass is heated evenly over its whole curve, instead of at one point the way a hotplate does. That matters for distillation, reflux and anything that would char if it overheated locally. MSE Supplies stocks MSE PRO and Witeg mantles from 100 ml up to 50 litres, with and without magnetic stirring.

Picking a size

Match the mantle to the flask, not to the volume of liquid. Too large and the flask sits in an air gap and heats slowly; too small and it will not seat at all. Most MSE PRO mantles reach 380°C and run continuously.

Heating only, or heating and stirring

A plain digital mantle heats and holds a set temperature. A magnetic stirring mantle adds a stirrer under the well, usually with stepless speed control, so the contents stay mixed while they heat. The stirring versions cost more and earn it on solutions that stratify or reactions that need a steady rate.
