Aluminum fluoride (AlF₃) is a colorless solid. It is an important additive for the production of aluminum by electrolysis to lower the melting point and increase the conductivity of the solution. It was proposed recently that AlF₃ coating on cathodes was very effective in enhancing the cycling performance and rate capability at a high cutoff voltage in battery research. It is also used as a low-index optical thin film.
