Applications
Gadolinium (Gd) is a rare earth element that belongs to the lanthanide series. It reacts with atmospheric oxygen or moisture slowly to form a black coating and thus needs to be stored properly. It is effective for use with neutron radiography and in shielding of nuclear reactors. It possesses unusual metallurgic properties and has been used in high temperature alloys. Other applications include MRI imaging, as green phosphors, as additive for optical crystals and superconducting materials and as an electrolyte in solid oxide fuel cells, etc.
