Electrode Sheet Fabrication for Pouch Cell

Posted by Chia-yu Chen on

MSE Supplies provides both standard and custom-made products and solutions to meet customer's specific requirements for battery manufacturing. For pouch cells, we offer various equipment for manufacturing from electrode sheet preparation to battery case formation and sealing.

Pouch cell consists of repeated stacks of multiple layers components which are enclosed in an aluminum laminated film case. Each stack contains electrodes, electrolyte and a separator. Electrode sheet preparation is a critical step to ensure the optimal quality and performance of a pouch cell. Here is the overview of the process steps.

  • Sinter raw cathode and anode active material using furnace.
  • Mill materials to small particles using milling machine.
  • Mix active and binder particles into paste using a slurry mixer.
  • Coat the paste film on a current collector to produce electrode by using a coater.
  • Use a roller press for calendaring to reduce the thickness and increase the density of the coated film.

MSE Supplies offers various battery manufacturing equipment to enable innovations for researchers and engineers. For pouch cell electrode sheet preparation, we have slurry mixer, vacuum coater and roller press and they can be customized to meet your needs.

Slurry Mixer

MSE Supplies offers a glovebox compatible benchtop vacuum mixer as well as a large size planetary vacuum mixer for research and production use. If you need to customize different size of containers, please email us at sales@msesupplies.com.

Film Coater

MSE Supplies has a automatic vacuum film coater with heating option. It has a unique driving system to ensure smooth coating on all types of substrates. The vacuum pump can fix copper foil/aluminum foil on the vacuum suction plate. The heating function can heat dry the coated film.

Roller Press

MSE Supplies also offers an electric hot roller press and a cold roller press with variable calendaring speed. This roller machine has high adjustment precision, which is convenient for sheet and strip material feeding and rolling. The thickness and speed of the pressed sheet can be adjusted. It can also be operated in forward and reversed direction. If you need to customize different width or roller material, please email us at sales@msesupplies.com.

One of the recent battery research works used the hot roller press for calendaring and has been published in a peer-reviewed journal. In this paper, a multilayer approach is used for producing electrodes to improve their mechanical and electrochemical properties.(Kumberg et al. 2021) The process parameters such as slurry formulation, mixing device and active material properties were determined to reduce drying time without drastically affecting electrodes’ performance. The author studied the solvent loading over drying time and use hot roller press to calendar a film with porosity ~45%.
