Neodymium Metal and Compounds

Atomic No.: 60

Neodymium is the third most abundant among the REEs. It shares characteristics of the other trivalent lanthanides.

Lasers, glass coloring and tinting, dielectrics are among the primary applications in addition to its most popular application in  permanent magnets Neodymium-Iron-Boron (Nd2Fe14B) system.

Neodymium has been useful in protective lenses for welding goggles due to its strong absorption band centered at 580 nm. In CRT displays technology, Neodymium play the role of enhancing contrast between reds and greens. Furthermore, It is highly valued in glass manufacturing for its attractive purple coloring mechanism.

For modern electronic equipment containing dielectric coatings and multi-layer capacitors based on BaTiO3 and SrTiO3. Neodymium is a very critical dopant to improve the materials electrical performance.

Nd-based Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet (YAG) lasers has been essential for various medical applications, drilling, welding and material processing due to its optimal absorption and emitting wavelengths.

Neodymium has been useful in cryocoolers for large specific heat capacity at liquid-helium temperatures.

Nd compounds are frequently used in fertilizer to promote plant growthdue to its similarities to Ca2+.
