MSE Supplies, a partner in innovation: Lithium Battery Materials (Article II)

Posted by MSE Supplies Admin on

MSE Supplies is a trusted partner globally in helping to enable innovations.  We have supplied materials, equipment, and lab supplies to over 2000 research laboratories and companies worldwide.  We are a U.S. based supplier helping the advancement of research in fields such as materials science, photovoltaics, energy storage, semiconductors, photonics, biomedical research, and basic science research, to name a few.

In this article, we highlight recent research using our products that have been presented in a peer reviewed journal.

A team of researchers from the USA and China published a paper on a composite solid polymer electrolyte for lithium ion batteries.  In this paper they used three different materials purchased from MSE Supplies, Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide cathode powder (specifically LiNi0.33Mn0.33Co0.33O2, NMC111), Ta-Doped Lithium Lanthanum Zirconate Garnet powder (Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12, LLZTO), and Lithium Iron Phosphate cathode powder (LiFePO4, LFP).

They developed a novel composite solid polymer electrolyte by embedding LLZTO in a mixture of polyvinylidene fluoride and a lithium containing salt.  The composite solid polymer electrolyte (CSPE) showed excellent thermal stability, high room temperature ionic conductivity, and a wide voltage window. Using this CSPE, they constructed a coin cells utilizing NMC111 and LFP cathode powders along with a lithium anode.  These coin cells were stable over 1000 cycles and had an in-situ measured thermally stable window up to 177 °C with a small heat release of 189 J g-1.  These numbers are far superior and safer to those of standard liquid electrolyte cells (thermal stable window 157 °C and 812 J g-1).
